INITIATIVE FOR THE GLOBAL HARMONIZATION OF ACCIDENT DATA

Thorough crash investigations are the basis for research and legislation in traffic accident safety. Many countries around the world have established systems to collect samples of in-depth accident data, which contains detailed information about:

  • Vehicles
  • Environment
  • Personal injuries
  • Anthropometric data
  • Accident mechanics
  • Event data e.g. from crash recorders
  • Full accident reconstruction of each traffic accident
They complement general accident statistics which are collected on a national level, such as the total number of fatalities and injured.

IGLAD is the "Initiative for the Global Harmonization of (in-depth) Accident Data" and is the only continuous international effort to provide a database of in-depth accident data from different countries around the world within a unified data scheme. Data from traffic safety researchers from Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia is merged on a yearly basis into the IGLAD database. It also offers a platform for accident researchers worldwide to communicate and share experiences and knowledge around accident research. The non-profit project is completely self-funded and offers its data to interested parties to be used for research purposes charging a moderate membership fee.

IGLAD was initiated by Mercedes-Benz Group AG, ACEA, and different research institutes and announced as a working group at the FIA Mobility Group in October 2010. The project celebrated its 10th yearly data release in June 2023.

Consortium

The consortium currently consists of 23 members complemented by the chair and the administrator from SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers, Sweden. The merged dataset includes data provided by 16 data providers located in 13 different countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy, USA, Spain, Sweden and Korea. New countries, data providers, and members are expected to join the project in the near future. The goal is to cover as many regions and countries of the world as possible.
